I read it yesterday and finished up this morning. In the early 1930's, a reporter Ellis sees a sign "Children for Sale" on a farmhouse and takes a picture. Someone else sees the picture and shows it to the editor. Ellis now gets his big break with a real feature in the paper. Unfortunately, someone ruins the negative, so Ellis returns to the remote Pennsylvania town. The house is abandoned, so he pays a widow in the neighborhood to allow him to recreate the picture with her kids, who are not for sale. The article and photo go "viral". SPOILERS- Ellis later learns that the widow thought she was ill with a terminal disease and is now fine. She doesn't ask for her children back. She just wants to know that they are ok.
