I am part of several Facebook groups for readers and one does an online book club each month. I usually like to get ebooks from the library, and during the school year I'm very busy so I never participated until now. I put myself on the Libby waiting list and actually got the book about a week later. I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did, since I didn't pick it and I think I misread the description. I read this book quickly because I did not want to put it down. It is about a journalist who becomes obsessed with a recluse horror film director. In the course of investigating Cordova, McGrath meets two other people who become involved in the search with him. The unlikely trio encounter supernatural explanations in their quest. The book has "primary sources" that make it so interesting, such as magazine articles, copies of autopsy reports, etc. I found out after I finished the book that there are also additional items online. I read it yesterday and finished up this morning. In the early 1930's, a reporter Ellis sees a sign "Children for Sale" on a farmhouse and takes a picture. Someone else sees the picture and shows it to the editor. Ellis now gets his big break with a real feature in the paper. Unfortunately, someone ruins the negative, so Ellis returns to the remote Pennsylvania town. The house is abandoned, so he pays a widow in the neighborhood to allow him to recreate the picture with her kids, who are not for sale. The article and photo go "viral". SPOILERS- Ellis later learns that the widow thought she was ill with a terminal disease and is now fine. She doesn't ask for her children back. She just wants to know that they are ok.
